Shawn Anthony Robinson, Ph.D. has been personally affected by dyslexia. Having grown up in Illinois, he was officially diagnosed with dyslexia going into his senior year of high school by Dr. Robert T. Nash. Robinson graduated from New Trier high school reading at an elementary level and started the Project Success summer program in 1996 at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. With the help of the Project Success program, along with Dr. William Kitz, Michael Flanagan and others, Robinson learned to read. He went on to receive bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees.
Throughout his academic journey after high school, he studied under Dr. Nash, learned his curriculum, and became a teacher of it. Prior to Dr. Nash’s death in 2017, he signed over the rights of his curriculum Pure and Complete Phonics to Robinson with the intention of him continuing is work. Robinson has made it his mission to reach, serve, and empower students with dyslexia in Special Education to achieve greatness though innovative curriculum and instruction.
Dr. Robinson and wife, Dr. Inshirah Robinson co-authored Doctor Dyslexia Dude, an authentic and realistic nonfiction graphic novel based on the real life adventures Shawn faced through his educational journey with dyslexia. Powerful illustrations help give readers insight into amplified emotions of anger, suspense, enthusiasm, surprise, anxiety, and hope. A struggling reader may connect to the main character’s frustration, situational anxiety, attitudes, and energy exhibited in the story all stemming from not knowing how to read. Readers may even feel as if they’re emotional buildup, moments of self-criticism, low self-esteem, and lack of motivation matches that of our hero, thus seeing our hero succeed gives readers hope and encourages readers to persevere.

Having shared my story with so many people, I’ve seen how inspiration and sincere direction can transform lives. Growing up with dyslexia, I’ve experienced adversity even at the highest levels of education, for myself, and everyone like me. Now is the time to break the mold of leaving children behind because they struggle to read and learn. With the right kind of diagnosis early on in life, we can save young students from what I went through.
